Data and Statistics

Here we aim to set the stage for what statistics is as a field of study and as a set of techniques for learning more about the world around us. I will add more to this playlist in the future.

Descriptive Statistics II

In this playlist, we introduce various numerical measures for describing single variable data and two techniques for bivariate data. We focus primarily on the standard deviation for a single variable since mean, median, and mode are fairly straightforward. The bivariate techniques are very important to understanding linear regression later on.

Introduction to Probability

In this playlist, we learn about permutations, combinations, set operations, and Venn diagrams. These videos overlap with Finite Mathematics so you may see a cross-population of videos. Probability prepares us to explore discrete probability distributions later on.

Discrete Probability Distributions

In this playlist, we learn about discrete random variables and the binomial and Poisson distributions. We talk about a specific type of distribution; the discrete probability distribution. When outcomes can only take specific values like in the flip of a coin or the roll of a die, the distribution takes on different characteristics.

Continuous Probability Distributions

In this playlist, we learn about the uniform, normal, and t distributions. When discrete distributions are sliced into infinitely small slices we enter the realm of the continuous. These distributions have characteristics that are prerequisites to understanding later topics.

PLAYLIST 7

Sampling and Sampling Distributions

In this playlist, we examine the very important, yet often misunderstood topic, of sampling distributions. When many samples are taken from a population that collection of sample means has its own distribution. Understanding the sampling distribution is fundamental to grasping later topics such as confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.

PLAYLIST 8

Confidence Interval Estimation

Point estimators such as the sample mean are never perfect. There is always a margin of error. Sometimes we know or are given the population standard deviation (sigma) or sometimes we do not know it and have to estimate it using the sample standard deviation. Using the margin of error we can form confidence intervals for these estimators.

Hypothesis Testing

In this playlist. we continue to learn about statistical inference by exploring whether a claim about a value of a population should or should not be rejected. We learn about null and alternative hypotheses in addition to Type I and Type II errors. P-values are also explained.

Inferences about Population Variances

Inferences can be made about variance just like we do for the mean, confidence intervals, hypothesis test, etc. Analyzing variance is very important for quality control and is a central tenet of Six Sigma. It allows us to make sure our processes are on target and within certain tolerances.

Goodness of Fit and Independence Tests

Up to this point we have talked about binomial experiments. What happens when we have more than two outcomes? We have multinomial experiments. To analyze these problems we use cross-tab charts and the chi-square test for independence: the relationship between observed and expected values.

ANOVA (ANalysis Of VAriance)

The world is much more complex than the comparison of only two populations allows. Therefore we need a technique that will allow us to compare many populations and even subgroups of those populations...all at once. ANOVA allows us to conduct that type of analysis.

Simple Linear Regression

Predicting the future and the unknown. While statistics cannot make us superhuman, it can help us make better predictions than we would get by random guessing. If we manage to create a model that allows us to predict the value of a dependent variable using an independent variable, how do we know that model is good? Simple Linear Regression is a powerful tool in statistics and machine learning.

Multiple Linear Regression

In this playlist, we expand simple linear regression into models that have more than one independent variable. We learn how to construct and evaluate basic models. Model building techniques are also explored such as forward, backward, stepwise, and best subsets. The playlist includes analysis with dummy variables and two categorical variables.

Logistic Regression

In this playlist, we continue Statistics 101 by learning the basics of Logistic Regression. We begin by walking through a sample problem that spans the entire playlist. We will learn how and when to apply logistic regression, interpret computer output, and also use the output to answer questions that extend beyond the original question. Logistic regression is a very important topic to learn for students studying machine learning.

ANCOVA (ANalysis of COVAriance)

In this playlist, we extend our knowledge of ANOVA to include a covariate(s). When we allocate some of the total sum of squares to a covariate, we can in essence control for the effects of that variable to focus on the effects of other variables.

Nonlinear Regression

In this playlist, we learn about nonlinear regression in the sense of regression types that are not simple straight lines. We talk about model fit, polynomial regression, overfitting, and related topics. Note that nonlinear regression can mean more than one thing. In this playlist, we use the term to mean not-a-straight-line.

Nonparametric Methods

Nonparametric statistics allows us to use other measures such as signs and ranks when our data does not meet the assumptions of other parametric tests, namely that the data is normally distributed. Many graphics are used to demonstrate how these nonparametric tests work.

Model Building and the General Linear Model (GLM)

The general linear model (GLM) is the umbrella term for numerous statistical methods. The goal of this playlist is to show the underlying commonalities among many different tests. Once the conceptual relationships are understood, it opens up a whole new world for understating how models are constructed.

Variable Transformations

Almost all models are based on certain assumptions about our data. For better or worse, many techniques are flexible or at least ambivalent about the characteristics of the data dumped into them. This can lead to garbage in, garbage out (GIGO). Here we learn how to transform variables to mean those assumptions so that the model has reduced error.
